Four canoeists rescued after 16-hour ordeal Four canoeists stranded on the Athabasca River overnight ― two on the shore and another two on a large rock ― sang to each other
Air Jordan Spizike through the night before being rescued Thursday morning by RCMP. It is a story of survival, RCMP spokeswoman Josee Valiquette said. The 16-hour ordeal began Wednesday afternoon when four people in two canoes were separated from the rest of their tour group on the water near Edson, about eight kilometres south of the Emerson Lakes Bridge, RCMP spokeswoman Josee Valiquette said.
A man and woman made it to shore after their canoe capsized. The tour company found the pair and dropped an emergency kit for them until help could arrived not realizing two women from the same group were stranded in the river on a large rock their canoe smashed into. When the pair on the shore used their newly delivered supplies to build a fire, the women on the rock spotted the flames and called out for help. Apparently they were singing to each other through the night ... in order to
Jordan 7 Raptors help each other through this ordeal, Valiquette said. RCMP were called around 10 p.m. Wednesday to help but the rescue operation was delayed until morning because the remote location and darkness presented safety risks. Officers returned to the area Thursday morning, rescuing the pair on the shore around 8:30 a.m. and the women on the rock about 9:30 a.m., Valiquette said. Our officers that were in the RCMP jet boat, one was driving and the other sort of leaned over to the rock to get them in the
Jordan 11 Concords boat.
The Athabasca River has a high level of water and a very strong current, she said, adding the rescue effort was challenging operation. The women told the officers they couldn't swim to the shore because of the force of the current. The canoeists were checked by emergency medical services and didn't require additional treatment. Their ages and identities weren't released. The Edson RCMP marine unit and Hinton fire department helped with the rescue.
