It is alleged he repeatedly raped a woman 11 Years, 11 Months ago Karma: 0
AFL footballer Stephen Milne faces court on rape charges ST Kilda football player Stephen Milne has appeared in court for the first time on rape charges. Milne, 33, did not speak during the brief appearance in the Melbourne Magistrates Court, in which dates were set for his lawyers to receive the police brief of evidence and for a committal mention in September. The AFL player was charged with four counts of rape last month relating to an incident in 2004.
It is alleged he repeatedly raped a woman, who was aged 19 at the time, at Jordan 25th Anniversary teammate Leigh Montagna's home following celebrations for the club's family day. The woman told police she thought she was having consensual sex with Montagna BUGS BUNNY 8S 2013 in the darkened bedroom, but realised it was someone else, allegedly Milne, when the door opened and shed more light. The case was abandoned in 2004 when the Director of Public Prosecutions decided the brief of evidence would not support a conviction, but was reopened last year following an Office of Police Integrity report which recommended a review of the evidence. Milne has consistently maintained his innocence. His barrister David Grace QC told the court that Milne had complained to the Herald-Sun newspaper after an article was published with part of the woman's statement and reference to Milne's police interview. We don't know how they got hold of this material, but they have it, Mr Grace said.
Milne declined to comment on the case as he left the court with his wife. He has not been chosen to play a match since the charges were laid, and will miss Sunday's game against Fremantle, Jordan 4 Military although St Kilda coach Scott Watters has voiced support for the player and declared he will return to the field sometime this month.
